Residents outraged after local storage unit gets burglarized, thousands of dollars in items stolen

AMERICUS, Ga. (WALB) - Residents in Americus are calling for answers after a local storage facility continues to see break-ins.

Multiple storage units at Turton Properties have been broken into, and thousands of dollars in items were stolen. WALB was able to obtain a copy of 16 incident reports dating back to 2023 showing a number of burglaries at the business.

One report from May 3, 2025, shows a victim whose washer and dryer were stolen. Another report shows that a full living room set, washing machine and three king size bedroom sets were also taken.

Residents said that they did have locks on their units, and police reports show that the Americus Police Department (APD) did inquire about security footage that they never received.

One resident recalls the time she found her unit had been broken into.

“Everything was just like I left it — in tact. And when I pulled the thing up, that’s when I saw that everything was gone” said Bernice Lyles. “It was just a scattery mess, and then I found this hat.”

Lyles said the hat she found in her unit did not belong to her, and she believes it belongs to the person who stole her items.

“Look — it’s hair inside the hat, specks of hair inside. And after I found out that happened, I cleared my unit out the next day,” Lyles said.

One resident, Bobby McCray, said his unit was broken into while he was in the hospital this past August.

“If they can get me my stuff back, fine. And if they can give me my money, that’s even better. But that’s injustice. Them taking folks’ stuff like that, and they’re not held accountable for it. That’s wrong,” McCray said.

WALB reached out to Turton Properties, but they refused to comment.

“We just want justice or reimbursement for our items. We need answers,” McCray said.

APD said these cases are still active because they have not found the person or people responsible for these burglaries, but when they do, the individuals will be facing a second degree felony charge.
