An urgent warning has been issued after a child whose oxygen levels dropped 'dangerously low' nearly suffocated getting trapped inside a parcel locker.

Cleveland Fire Brigade were called to the scene at a car park in Redcar, North Yorkshire on Sunday February 9.

Crews had to provide emergency oxygen and the locker door was forced open giving the youngster a narrow escape.

A spokesman said: 'On Sunday 9th February, a call came in alerting us to a child who was trapped inside a parcel locker in a car park in Redcar.

'Firefighters arrived swiftly at the scene and forced open the locker door. With no ventilation inside, the child's oxygen levels dropped dangerously low.

'Crews provided emergency oxygen therapy and ensured the child received further medical attention.

'This could have been fatal. The message is clear - never climb inside a confined space or a parcel locker.

'Help us spread this important safety message to warn young people about the life-threatening dangers of enclosed spaces.

'If you spot an open or damaged parcel locker, please report it to the provider immediately to prevent potential risks.'

A post about the accident has been shared almost 400 times and one man commented: 'Who an (sic) earth lets a child climb into a parcel locker.'

But someone else replied: 'Another child? Kids playing out and doing mad stuff maybe?'
